Wood type
Both woods perform equally.
The only difference is tone: one light, one dark.
Details
Hardwood
The board begins with solid FSC-certified, sustainably sourced hardwood, either black walnut or hard maple. Both of these wood species sit within the 900-1,500 lbf sweet spot for Janka hardness (the Janka test measures how resistant wood is to dents and wear). Maple rates 1,450 lbf, walnut 1,010 lbf. Wood below this range is too soft, and will dent and wear excessively from use. Wood above this range is too hard and dulls knives, while being more prone to cracking.
Proportions
Sized at 18 x 14 x 1.75 inches, the board provides maximum surface area while still being light enough to move with ease. After countless trials, we found this height is the perfect balance for maximizing board strength and durability without being overly heavy.
End grain
Aside from its elegant beauty, end grain is the ideal composition for your board, knives, and sanitation. End grain construction means the wood fibers stand vertically. As you cut, your knife blade slips between fibers instead of slicing across them. When the board is not being used, the fibers close back up, hiding knife marks and resisting deep scars or splits. It also helps prevent bacteria from getting trapped, keeping the surface safer.
Juice groove
One side of the board features a groove engraved around the edge. This catches liquids before they reach the counter. It's a detail that keeps prep clean, and improves hygiene by reducing the possibility of cross-contamination.
Grip
Recessed handles are carved into the sides, giving you a natural grip that's invisible from above. We designed these handles for maximum grip portability, so the board feels steady whether it's moving around the kitchen or in the sink.
Reversible design
Two sides, two purposes. The board is flat on one side, and has a carved juice channel on the other. Use the groove side for proteins, and the other for bread, produce, or cheese. A fully reversible board extends longevity by doubling the cutting surface, meaning less wear on either side. It also provides more versatility and reduces cross-contamination through the different functionality.
Rounded edges
Every corner and edge is rounded to a precise, gentle radius. Outside of comfort, this adds board longevity by preventing the chipping and splintering that sharp corners invite.
Signatures
We've discreetly laser engraved our logo and wordmark as signatures of authorship along the board's long edges.
Checkerboard
Each wood block is a 1.75" cube and creates a timeless design that feels at home in any kitchen.
Ready to use
The board is hand-sanded to a velvety matte finish. Then sealed with our unscented oil blend, which is free of petroleum-based mineral oils. The surface is buttery-smooth and the board comes ready for use. No pre-wash or oil required. Set it down and cook.
Only what's essential
We've left out everything that doesn't belong on a cutting board. Wood alone has natural antimicrobial properties that outperform composite materials like plastic or silicone. You won't find any harsh chemicals, toxic finishes, dyes, stains, or anything non-food-safe.
Handcrafted
The board is made and inspected by hand. No two boards are ever identical, as grain, hue, and variations in character shift from piece to piece. These are signs of natural origin and of its human craft.
